Realising in adulthood that you are autistic, have ADHD, or may be neurodivergent can bring many different emotions.
For some people there is relief. For others there may be grief, anger, validation, confusion or a period of looking back at previous experiences through an entirely different lens.
There is no correct way to respond.
Whether you have received a formal diagnosis, are awaiting assessment or have begun to self-identify as neurodivergent, you may wonder: What support am I actually supposed to get now?
Start with understanding yourself
Support does not have to begin with trying to change anything. It can begin with understanding.
You might explore your sensory preferences, regulation, experience of demands, executive functioning, communication preferences, energy and fatigue, masking, routines, relationships, work, sleep, rest and meaningful interests.
This can help shift the question from “Why can’t I manage this like everyone else?” towards “What does my brain and body need for this to work better?”
What Professional Support Might Be Helpful?
An Occupational Therapist can look at the practical impact of neurodivergence across everyday life, including sensory regulation, executive functioning, home routines, work, energy management, community participation and independence.
Some adults find it helpful to explore identity, relationships, previous experiences, anxiety, burnout or the impact of years spent masking with an appropriately experienced professional.
Adults with ADHD who wish to explore medication or other medical aspects of care should discuss this with an appropriately qualified medical professional.
Sometimes the environment needs to change. This might include clearer communication, flexibility, reduced sensory load, written instructions or different ways of organising tasks.
Connecting with other neurodivergent adults can also provide language, ideas and a sense of recognition.
You Do Not Need to Change Everything at Once
Often it is more useful to begin with the area having the greatest impact on everyday life — perhaps work, home routines, sensory overload or simply understanding yourself better.
